Formed in 2006 by American Express, Discover, JCB International, MasterCard and Visa Inc., the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) is a global forum that brings together payments industry stakeholders to develop and drive adoption of data security standards and resources for safe payments worldwide.

PCI Security Standards are developed by this group specifically to protect payment account data throughout the payment lifecycle and to enable technology solutions that devalue this data and remove the incentive for criminals to steal it. The standards apply to all entities that store, process or transmit cardholder data – with requirements for software developers and manufacturers of applications and devices used in those transactions.

Because the PCI SSC is continually monitoring and maintaining their standards for protecting sensitive data, for the latest information regarding their standards we recommend visiting the PCI Security Standards Council website.
