Troubleshooting — Shipping Label Creation Errors
Applies To: [ All Licenses ]
Overview
This guide covers the most common causes of shipping label creation errors and the steps to diagnose and resolve them.
Label Generation Fails or Produces an Error
Navigate to the job and attempt to create the shipping label.
Note the exact error message displayed.
Go to Settings > Shipping and verify your carrier API credentials (UPS or FedEx) are correctly entered and have not expired.
Confirm your carrier account is active and in good standing — suspended carrier accounts will reject API calls.
If using FedEx, confirm you have completed the FedEx API certification process. See How to complete FedEx API Certification for shipping labels.
Invalid Address Error
Shipping carriers validate addresses against their database before generating a label. If you receive an address error:
Open the order and review the shipping address.
Verify the street address, city, state, and zip code are correct and complete.
Confirm the zip code matches the city and state.
If the address is a PO Box, ensure the selected shipping method supports PO Box delivery (UPS and FedEx do not deliver to PO Boxes).
Correct the address on the order and attempt label creation again.
Label Creates But Does Not Print
Confirm your label printer is connected and set as the default printer for the admin workstation.
Try downloading the label PDF directly and printing from your PDF viewer.
If labels print from the PDF but not automatically from the admin, check your browser's pop-up blocker settings — label generation may be blocked as a pop-up.
Carrier Account Not Appearing in Shipping Options
Go to Settings > Shipping and confirm the carrier is enabled.
Verify the API credentials are saved — credentials that fail validation may appear blank after a failed save.
For FedEx, ensure the Developer API connection is configured separately from the standard FedEx account. See How do I connect my storefront to the FedEx Developer API?.
Notes / Tips
FedEx and UPS each have two separate credential sets: one for live rate calculation and one for label generation. Ensure both are configured if you use both features.
Test label creation on a low-value or sample order before processing live customer shipments after any credential change.
For persistent API errors, check the carrier's developer portal or status page for outages.
